In 2016, a few incidents occurred within sport involving cardiac arrests. This hit home when a couple of these incidents occurred on the Norton Sports Charity’s site and became more evident when a local, young footballer collapsed in the area. It was then decided that an AED should be put on site. After meetings with the NEAS and realising how big the site is and the massive amount of footfall it has, it was decided that three AEDs would be needed for the complex and the surrounding residential areas. One of the junior football managers started the fundraising off with ‘dry January’ and managed to raise in excess of £500.
Our hosted clubs each contributed towards this venture along with Cardioproof, which meant our first AED could be installed on the site. As the fundraising continued and more companies sponsored the cause, it was at this point that the Football Foundation introduced a scheme to get more AEDs where football is played.
With this initiative, it meant we were moving closers to our ultimate goal of three AEDs. Norton Stockton Ancients Junior Football Club became one of Norton Co-op’s three chosen charities, and with their help, we have now completed the installation of all three AEDs, complete with Defibsafe cabinets.
